We came close working things out many times. A big early mistake was making AO as a totally secure casual mmo (which it still is) that would need a publisher to cover the risks. We need to raise funds and take time to convert AO to work better on a cloud server, integrate a way to make a minimal amount of money from X users to support X users. Right now, we are gearing up to do a work-for-hire phone job. I think AO is a really solid game, and can do well. We were able to make a good amount of money from licensing AO tech so far.
